As the British Council celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2024, it is excited to announce the launch of the British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowships in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh. This initiative presents a unique opportunity for postdoctoral researchers from around the world to advance their academic careers and engage in international cultural exchange.
This program awards two 12-month fellowships, starting in January 2025, providing a robust platform for personal and professional growth. During the first ten months, you will be immersed in the academic environment of IASH at the University of Edinburgh. For the remaining two months, you will return to their home countries to focus on sharing your research findings and collaborating with the British Council on knowledge exchange initiatives.

Eligibility Criteria for International Students
- The fellowships are open to researchers specifically who are within seven years of completing their PhD.
- You must be resident of an ODA recipient country where the British Council operates.
- Research proposals should align with the British Council’s thematic interests, which include arts, education, international relations, cultural diplomacy, and more. Proposals should aim to contribute to the policy and practice of Official Development Assistance (ODA).
Application Process
You need to submit an online application form along with a cover letter that outlines how your research supports the British Council’s objectives. A minimum of two confidential references are also required.
