The Australian National University (ANU) offers a special scholarship called the University Research Scholarship to help top HDR students who are doing advanced research. If you’re planning on exploring new ideas and making exciting discoveries, this scholarship could really help you out by covering your expenses and giving you the support to focus on your work.

Scholarship Value and Benefits

The University Research Scholarship provides substantial financial support, offering $36,652 per annum paid fortnightly for up to 3.5 years. Additional benefits include:

  • Potential for a 6-month extension.
  • Travel allowances if you’re relocating to Canberra for your studies.
  • A thesis allowance to support your research publication needs.
  • Dependent Child allowance (applicable only to international students).
  • Paid leaves including medical, maternity, and parental leave.

Eligibility Criteria for ANU Scholarship

To be eligible for this ANU research scholarship, you must:

  • Be already enrolled or plan to enroll in a higher research degree at ANU.
  • Have achieved a minimum of H1 or equivalent in your prior studies.

Selection Process for Scholarship: The selection process is rigorously merit-based and each college at ANU has a selection committee that reviews applications. They look at:

  • Your grades and academic history.
  • How much potential you have for research.
  • Recommendations from your supervisors.
  • Your English skills.
  • How your application compares to others.

Application Procedure

No separate application is required for this scholarship. Eligibility is assessed based on the admission application to an HDR program. It’s advisable for you to:

  • Submit your program application and scholarship at least 2-3 weeks before the deadline.
  • Ensure all supporting documentation, including referee reports, are complete before the scholarship deadline.
  • Make contact with the relevant Graduate Studies Convener or a prospective supervisor to discuss your proposed research topic.

Dates to Remember

ANU organizes its scholarship awards in two main rounds each year, It’s essential for prospective students to apply by these deadlines:

  • Round 1 International: Apply by August 31st to start by March 31st of the next year.
  • Round 1 Domestic: Apply by October 31st to start by March 31st of the next year.
  • Round 2 (for Everyone): Apply by April 15th to start by August 31st of the same year.
