PhD Scholarship 2024 (CLAIMS to Energy Citizenship in Cape Town)

The African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town invites you to apply for a PhD scholarship in the vibrant field of urban energy transitions.

This opportunity is part of the exciting CLAIMS to Energy Citizenship project, generously funded by DANIDA for the period 2024-2028.

Project Overview

This scholarship aligns with Work Package 1 (WP1), which explores energy access through daily practices and activism. You will engage deeply with communities in Khayelitsha, investigating how local energy solutions like mini-grids influence lives. Under the mentorship of Prof. Karen Waltorp and Dr. Liza Cirolia, your research will be both impactful and grounded in real community experiences.

Who Should Apply for Phd Scholarship in Cape Town?

This opportunity is designed for students who:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in anthropology, geography, sociology, urban studies, or a related field.
  • Have demonstrated experience in ethnographic research, especially in underserviced urban settings.
  • Are ready to immerse themselves in a comprehensive project, attending workshops and collaborating on international exchanges.

  • A writing sample: Showcase your analytical skills in a 250-word excerpt.

A committee will assess your application based on academic merit and your alignment with the project’s goals.
